Dogs possess an extraordinary olfactory system that allows them to perceive scents in ways we can only imagine. While humans have approximately 5 million scent receptors, dogs have an astounding 125 - 300 million scent receptors!This exceptional olfactory ability allows them to detect even the faintest of odors, making them excellent trackers, search and rescue companions, and even cancer detectors. It's truly remarkable how our furry friends can detect scents that are completely imperceptible to us.
How Do They Do It?
Dogs possess a specialized organ called the vomeronasal organ, or Jacobson's organ, which detects pheromones and other chemical signals. The vomeronasal organ is located in the nasal cavity and serves as a separate olfactory system alongside their regular sense of smell. This extraordinary organ is responsible for detecting pheromones and other chemical signals that are imperceptible to humans. When a dog encounters a scent, they often engage in a behavior known as "Flehmen response." This involves lifting their upper lip and drawing air into the vomeronasal organ, allowing them to fully analyze and interpret the scent's intricate details.
Using this organ on top of their regular sense of smell, they have a superpower for deciphering scents!
