Tips From the Country's Top Veterinarian!

In case you missed it - we had one of the country's top veterinarians on our call in the 40 Day Furry Friend Photo Challenge!

Doctor Pratt has a bachelor's degree in animal nutrition, a master's degree in genetics, a Ph.D. in proteomics, a veterinary degree, and an executive MBA! She has done general practice, ER medicine and works with exotics. We are so grateful to her for hopping on the call to answer questions submitted by our group members! We got a ton of amazing information.

Dr. Pratt shared a LOT of incredible knowledge in our call with her. But here are a few of our favorite highlights of things all pet parents should know:

Allergies and Your Pets

Did you know allergies in dogs and cats are from one of or a combination of just 3 things?

Flea Saliva! If a pet gets bitten and happens to be allergic to flea saliva, they get itchy!
In 10% of cases, it can be the food they're eating. And if it's a food allergy, it is likely to a protein they are eating!
And finally, it can be their environment. This is the case 70% of the time. When your pet is allergic to something in their environment they can take a daily allergy medication or get a monthly injection from their vet.

Potty Training

Dr. Pratt had a lot of amazing advice about potty training! Her biggest recommendation for people is to be mindful on how they clean up messes inside.You want to chemically break down any messes to prevent them from going in that spot again.

"One thing that I teach people with potty training is anytime you have things like a rug or anything that can absorb liquids (like hardwood floor) is that you need to use a very good urine destroyer. And what I mean by that is not bleach and not just your Clorox wipes, you know, not the Greenwipes, stuff that you buy from the grocery store, but use something that's specific for animals to break down the odor.

Now, there are so many different options on the market. FurryFreshness certainly helps a lot! No matter what you're using, it just needs to break down the odor because there's hormones inside of urine and fecal material and vomit, and those enzymes or oxidants, which is used in FurryFreshness, can break down those odors.

And so things like Clorox bleach, actually, is kinda dangerous, and you're not supposed to put it on urine products because it makes a toxic gas type compound."

Dr. Pratt's Thoughts on Acupuncture

"Acupuncture is definitely a great way to keep your pet healthy, and very few people are using it right now for preventative care. They're actually doing some amazing things in human medicine right now. They're making an entire institute out west that is set up literally to do just preventative medicine and holistic techniques and focuses a lot on nutrition and acupuncture and all that in humans, actually.

And they're doing a ton of research right now. It's not really something everybody knows about, but it's gonna be coming in the next five years. And I'm hopeful that they'll make, you know, a pet one as well, but I would say a definite yes to the acupuncture for dogs, honestly. It would be a great help. If you are financially able to do that, that would definitely help them to live longer, happier lives."
